Deuteronomy 32:3

Because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

Deuteronomy 32:3 (KJV)

Deuteronomy is the fifth book of Moses, part of the Torah. It records Moses’ farewell speeches to Israel before they enter the Promised Land. This verse opens the Song of Moses, a poetic and prophetic witness to God’s faithfulness and to Israel’s history. Moses speaks here as a leader preparing the people to remember the Lord’s character and works.

The Hebrew word translated as “publish” means “proclaim” or “declare.” Moses commits himself to making known the name of the Lord. In Scripture, God’s name represents His character, nature, and attributes. To publish that name is to declare who God truly is. The second half of the verse calls the people to “ascribe” greatness to God. To ascribe means to attribute or assign a quality to someone. Here, the people are to recognize and declare that greatness belongs to the Lord alone. This is not adding to God but acknowledging what is already true of Him.

The name of the Lord is closely tied to the revelation God gave Moses in Exodus 34:6-7, where God proclaims His own name and attributes. There, He reveals Himself as merciful, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. So proclaiming God’s name involves declaring His mercy, grace, and justice. The verse also sets the tone for the next verse, Deuteronomy 32:4, which describes God as the Rock whose work is perfect and whose ways are just. The call to ascribe greatness prepares the people to hear and accept this declaration of God’s righteous character.

Knowing and proclaiming the name of the Lord is still a calling for believers. We can know God intimately by studying His Word and understanding His character. We can declare His name by sharing our experiences of His faithfulness with others. Ascribing greatness to God should be a daily practice. Worship, prayer, and a lifestyle of reverence all give Him the honor He deserves. As we recognize His sovereignty, power, and majesty, we grow in our relationship with Him. Reflecting God’s greatness also means living in a way that shows His character. We demonstrate His love, mercy, and justice by treating others with kindness, compassion, and fairness. Our lives bear witness to the greatness of our God.

This verse calls us to both speak and live the truth about God. When we publish His name, we join Moses in declaring who God is. When we ascribe greatness to Him, we align our hearts with His true worth. Let this verse shape how we speak of God and how we honor Him each day.
