Listen to this article

They shall call the people vnto the mountaine, there they shal offer sacrifices of righteousnesse: for they shall sucke of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures hid in the sand. Deuteronomy 33:19 (KJV)

Deuteronomy 33:18-19 is part of the blessings pronounced by Moses upon the tribes of Israel before his death. The passage addresses both Zebulun and Issachar. The verse speaks of the blessings that Zebulun and Issachar would receive from God. They are promised to “suck of the abundance of the seas.” This imagery conveys the idea of their prosperous coastal territories, which would provide them with abundant resources and sustenance. The seas symbolize the vast wealth and resources that God would bless them with.

The verse mentions “treasures hid in the sand.” This suggests that their territories would also be rich in hidden or untapped resources. It implies that God would bless them not only with obvious blessings but also with unexpected and hidden treasures. This serves as a reminder that God’s blessings may come in various forms, some of which may be hidden or require discovery.

The verse states that the people would call others to the mountain to offer “sacrifices of righteousness.” This implies that despite their material blessings, they would remain faithful to God and His commandments. They are depicted as tribes that would call the people to the mountain, suggesting their role as spiritual leaders or influencers, drawing others closer to God.

Coastal Prosperity: The verse highlights Zebulun’s location near the sea, suggesting access to maritime trade and resources. Territorial Boundaries: By mentioning the tribe’s borders extending eastward and westward, the verse underscores the extent of Zebulun’s allotted land. Spiritual Context: The verse is delivered within the larger framework of Moses’ covenantal blessings, reminding readers that material blessings are intertwined with divine favor.

Lessons for today:

Gratitude for Provision: Recognizing that God’s blessings may include practical advantages encourages gratitude for the ways in which we are provided for. Stewardship of Resources: With any material benefit comes the responsibility to manage it wisely and share it generously with others. Hidden Blessings: Even when blessings are not overtly dramatic, they can be evident in everyday circumstances like a supportive community or a strategic environment. Faithful Witness: Their role in calling others to the mountain serves as a reminder to be faithful witnesses of God’s goodness and to share our faith with others.

In summary, Deuteronomy 33:18-19 conveys God’s blessings upon the tribes of Zebulun and Issachar, promising them prosperity, hidden treasures, and the responsibility to be faithful witnesses. In summary, Deuteronomy 33:19 affirms God’s blessing on the tribe of Zebulun, emphasizing its coastal setting and territorial reach.
