Deuteronomy 7:17

Posted on 1 July 2024
Listen to this article

“If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?”

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, which is the first five books of the Old Testament. It contains Moses’ final instructions to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses is addressing the Israelites as they prepare to conquer the nations inhabiting Canaan.

Acknowledging the challenge:The verse begins with the phrase “If thou shalt say in thine heart,” indicating that Moses is addressing a common concern or doubt that might arise among the Israelites. The Israelites were about to face nations that were larger and stronger than they were. Moses acknowledges the possibility of fear or doubt creeping into their hearts.

Trusting in God’s provision:The verse continues, “These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?” Here, Moses is expressing the potential doubt or insecurity the Israelites may feel when they look at the formidable opposition before them. However, this verse serves as a reminder to trust in the Lord’s provision and power. Moses is encouraging the Israelites to focus on God’s faithfulness and not be deterred by the apparent challenges they face.

The promise of God’s assistance:Although the verse does not explicitly mention it, the surrounding verses emphasize that God is with the Israelites and will fight for them. In Deuteronomy 7:18-19, Moses reassures the people that the Lord will go before them and defeat their enemies, just as He did to the Egyptians. The Israelites are reminded of the mighty acts God performed on their behalf in the past and are encouraged to trust in His continued intervention.

Lessons for believers today:While this verse speaks specifically to the Israelites preparing to enter the Promised Land, there are relevant lessons for believers today. It reminds us that challenges and opposition may appear insurmountable, causing doubts and fears to arise. However, we are called to place our trust in God’s faithfulness and strength, knowing that He is capable of overcoming any obstacle we face. Just as God provided for the Israelites and fought on their behalf, He remains the same today and is ready to assist and guide His people through difficult circumstances.

In summary, Deuteronomy 7:17 serves as a reminder to the Israelites, and to believers today, to trust in God’s provision and strength even in the face of daunting challenges. It encourages us to look beyond our own limitations and rely on His faithfulness to overcome any obstacles we encounter.
