Listen to this article

“And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.”

Ecclesiastes 12:9 (KJV) says, “And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.”

This verse comes from the concluding remarks of the book of Ecclesiastes, which is attributed to King Solomon, known as the Preacher in this context. Ecclesiastes is a profound and philosophical book that explores the meaning of life, the pursuit of wisdom, and the futility of human endeavours apart from God.

Let’s break down Ecclesiastes 12:9 and explore its key components:

The Preacher’s Wisdom:The verse begins by acknowledging the wisdom of the Preacher, who is King Solomon. Solomon was renowned for his God-given wisdom and was known for his insights and understanding.

Teaching Knowledge:Despite the Preacher’s wisdom, he didn’t keep it to himself. He actively taught the people knowledge, sharing his wisdom and understanding with others. This indicates the Preacher’s commitment to imparting knowledge and wisdom to those around him.

Good Heed and Diligence:The verse further emphasises the Preacher’s approach to teaching. He gave good heed, meaning he paid careful attention, and sought out knowledge. This suggests that the Preacher was diligent in his quest for wisdom, actively seeking and researching to gain a deeper understanding.

Proverbs:The verse mentions that the Preacher set in order many proverbs. Proverbs are concise, memorable statements that convey wisdom and practical advice. This implies that the Preacher not only shared his personal insights but also curated and organised a collection of proverbs to help guide others in their lives.

Overall, Ecclesiastes 12:9 highlights the Preacher’s wisdom, his commitment to teaching knowledge, his diligence in seeking wisdom, and his compilation of proverbs. It serves as a reminder that wisdom is a valuable gift from God, meant to be shared with others for their benefit.

This verse encourages us to pursue wisdom, to actively seek knowledge, and to share what we have learned with others. It reminds us that knowledge and wisdom are not to be hoarded but to be used to bless and guide others on their journey.
