Ecclesiastes 2:10

Listen to this article

And whatsoeuer mine eyes desired, I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any ioy: for my heart reioyced in all my labour; and this was my portion of all my labour. Ecclesiastes 2:10 (KJV)

The book of Ecclesiastes is attributed to King Solomon, renowned for his wisdom and wealth. In this book Solomon reflects on the vanity and meaninglessness of life when it is pursued solely for earthly pleasures and achievements. In this verse he describes his pursuit of pleasure and the conclusion he draws from it.

Pursuit of desires – Solomon acknowledges that he did not deny himself any earthly desires or pleasures. He indulged in everything his eyes desired, withholding nothing, and did not hold back his heart from any joy. This reveals the extent to which he sought fulfillment in worldly pursuits.

Joy in labor – Solomon states that his heart rejoiced in all his labour. He found satisfaction in his accomplishments and took pleasure in the fruits of his work. His endeavors likely included constructing grand buildings, amassing wealth, and acquiring wisdom.

Temporary fulfillment – Solomon describes his pursuit of pleasure and labour as his “portion.” In other words, he believed that all his efforts and achievements were his share of the rewards in life. Yet he notes that this is a temporary, earthly portion, not an eternal one.

Reflection – Although Solomon engaged in a relentless pursuit of pleasure and experienced temporary satisfaction, he ultimately arrives at a somber conclusion regarding the meaning and value of these pursuits. In the verses that follow he explores the futility of worldly pursuits and how they fail to provide lasting fulfillment or purpose.

Spiritual significance – The verse prompts us to reflect on our own pursuits and desires. It encourages a balanced approach to life, recognizing that true fulfillment is found in a relationship with God and the pursuit of His purposes. Earthly pleasures may bring temporary happiness, but they cannot satisfy the deeper longings of our souls.

In summary, Ecclesiastes 2:10 presents King Solomon’s candid reflection on his pursuit of pleasure and labour. It highlights the temporary nature of earthly pursuits and the need for a deeper, more meaningful source of fulfillment in life.
