Ecclesiastes 3:22

Listen to this article

“Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?”

Context:Ecclesiastes is a book in the Old Testament attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. It explores the meaning and purpose of life. In this verse, Solomon reflects on the inevitability of death and encourages people to find joy in their own work.

Finding joy in our work:Solomon observes that there is nothing better for a person than to rejoice in their own works. This suggests that finding fulfillment and satisfaction in the tasks we undertake is important. Our work can encompass various aspects of life, such as our careers, relationships, and personal endeavours. Instead of focusing on the uncertainties and unknowns of the future, Solomon emphasises the value of enjoying the fruits of our labour in the present.

Gratitude for our portion:Solomon further states that rejoicing in our own works is our portion. This refers to our allotted portion or share in life. Each person has a unique calling, purpose, and set of opportunities. Rather than comparing ourselves to others or longing for what we don’t have, we are encouraged to appreciate and be content with what we have been given. This emphasises the importance of gratitude and recognising the blessings in our lives.

The uncertainty of the future:Solomon poses a rhetorical question, asking who can bring a person to see what will happen after them. This question underscores the uncertainty and limited knowledge we have about the future. We cannot control or fully comprehend what lies ahead. Therefore, it is wiser to focus on the present and make the most of our current circumstances, rather than worrying excessively about the future.

Application in daily life:Ecclesiastes 3:22 teaches us several important lessons. Firstly, it encourages us to find joy and satisfaction in our work, recognising the value of our efforts and accomplishments. Secondly, it reminds us to be grateful for our portion in life, avoiding comparison and cultivating contentment. Finally, it urges us to live in the present and embrace the uncertainties of the future, trusting in God’s sovereignty.

Overall, Ecclesiastes 3:22 highlights the importance of finding joy, gratitude, and contentment in our own works and lives, rather than being consumed by worry and comparison. By living in the present, appreciating our blessings, and trusting in God’s guidance, we can experience a deeper sense of fulfilment and purpose.
