Ecclesiastes 5:4

Posted on 18 May at 15:08
Listen to this article

“When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.”

Context:When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Ecclesiastes 5:4 (KJV)

This verse comes from the book of Ecclesiastes, which is traditionally attributed to King Solomon. Ecclesiastes is a unique book in the Bible as it reflects on the meaning of life and the pursuit of wisdom. It examines various aspects of human existence, exploring the futility of worldly pursuits and the importance of seeking God’s guidance.

Now, let’s break down Ecclesiastes 5:4 and extract its key teachings:

“When thou vowest a vow unto God”:This phrase refers to making a promise or a vow to God. In biblical times, people would often make vows to God to express their dedication, commitment, or gratitude. It could be a promise to fulfil a certain task, offer a sacrifice, or make a specific commitment.

“Defer not to pay it”:This part emphasises the importance of fulfilling the vow or promise made to God without delay. It implies that once a vow is made, it should be treated as a solemn commitment and not taken lightly. Delaying the fulfilment of a vow shows a lack of respect and faithfulness toward God.

“For he hath no pleasure in fools”:Here, “fools” refers to those who make vows but fail to keep them. God does not take pleasure in insincere promises or empty words. He desires genuine devotion and obedience from His people. Failing to keep a vow demonstrates foolishness and a lack of integrity.

“Pay that which thou hast vowed”:This final phrase emphasises the importance of fulfilling one’s vows to God. It stresses the need to follow through on the commitments made to Him. When we make a vow, it becomes our responsibility to honour it and fulfil it according to God’s expectations.

From this verse, we can draw a few practical lessons:

  • a) Integrity and honesty: We should be cautious when making vows or promises to God, ensuring that we are sincere and fully committed. It is better to refrain from making a vow than to make one and not keep it.
  • b) Prompt fulfilment: Once we have made a vow to God, we should be diligent in fulfilling it. Procrastination or delay can undermine the seriousness of our commitment and display a lack of reverence toward God.
  • c) God’s pleasure: God desires our genuine devotion and obedience. Keeping our vows reflects our faithfulness and respect for Him.
  • d) Responsibility: It is important to take personal responsibility for the commitments we make. We are accountable to God for fulfilling our vows.

Overall, Ecclesiastes 5:4 reminds us of the seriousness of making promises or vows to God. It urges us to uphold our commitments with sincerity, promptness, and reverence for the Lord.
