Ecclesiastes 9:16

Listen to this article

“Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.”

Context:To understand the verse better, let’s explore the context of Ecclesiastes. The book of Ecclesiastes is attributed to King Solomon and reflects his search for the meaning and purpose of life. Throughout the book, Solomon explores various aspects of life and discusses the vanity of worldly pursuits.

Wisdom over Strength:The verse begins with the statement, “Wisdom is better than strength.” Here, Solomon highlights the superiority of wisdom over physical strength. He recognizes that being wise is more valuable and advantageous than being strong. Wisdom enables a person to make sound judgments, make better decisions, and navigate life successfully.

The Despised Poor Man’s Wisdom:Solomon goes on to observe that despite the value of wisdom, the wisdom of a poor man is often despised. In many societies, the poor are often marginalised and their opinions or contributions are overlooked. The world tends to favour the rich and influential, while disregarding the insights and perspectives of those who lack wealth or social status.

Unheard Words:Solomon further remarks that the poor man’s words are not heard. This can be understood as a consequence of the poor man’s social standing and the tendency of people to prioritise the opinions of the powerful or wealthy. Despite having valuable insights and wisdom to share, the poor man struggles to be heard or taken seriously.

Lessons for Life:This verse highlights the importance of wisdom and the tendency of society to overlook the wisdom of those in humble circumstances. As believers, we should recognise the value of wisdom and seek to cultivate it in our own lives. We should also strive to treat all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of their socio-economic status, and listen to their perspectives.

Jesus, the Wisdom of God:In the New Testament, we learn that Jesus Christ is the embodiment of wisdom. In 1 Corinthians 1:24, it says, “But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” Through faith in Christ, we can gain access to the wisdom of God and experience a transformed life.

In conclusion, Ecclesiastes 9:16 reminds us of the superiority of wisdom over strength and sheds light on the tendency of society to undervalue the wisdom of those who are poor or marginalised. As believers, we should seek wisdom, value it in ourselves and others, and treat all individuals with dignity and respect. Additionally, we can find ultimate wisdom in Jesus Christ, who is the embodiment of God’s wisdom.
