Ephesians 1:13

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”

Context:Before diving into Ephesians 1:13, it’s important to understand the context of the passage. The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. In the preceding verses, Paul writes about the blessings that believers have in Christ Jesus, including being chosen by God, predestined to adoption, and redeemed through His blood.

Trusting in Christ:In this verse, Paul emphasises that the Ephesians (and by extension, all believers) also trusted in Christ. This implies that they had heard the word of truth and the gospel of their salvation. Trusting in Christ involves acknowledging and accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour, believing in His sacrificial death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins.

Hearing the word of truth:The Ephesians’ trust in Christ came after hearing the word of truth. This refers to the proclamation of the gospel, the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. It highlights the importance of receiving and understanding the truth of God’s Word as a prerequisite to faith.

Gospel of salvation:The word of truth that the Ephesians heard was the gospel of their salvation. The gospel is the good news that God, in His grace, provided a way for humanity to be reconciled to Him through faith in Jesus Christ. It is the message of salvation and eternal life through Jesus’ atoning work on the cross.

Believing and being sealed:Paul mentions that after hearing the word of truth and trusting in Christ, the Ephesians were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. This sealing refers to the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence in the life of a believer. It signifies the security, ownership, and identification of believers as God’s redeemed children.

Holy Spirit of promise:The Holy Spirit is referred to as the “Holy Spirit of promise” because He is the fulfilment of God’s promise to send the Spirit to dwell within believers (see Acts 2:33). The Holy Spirit is given to believers as a guarantee or down payment of their future inheritance in Christ (Ephesians 1:14).
