“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love”

Context:To better understand Ephesians 1:4, it is important to consider the context of the verse. The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Ephesus. In this particular verse, Paul is expressing the amazing truth of God’s eternal plan and purpose for believers in Christ.

God’s choice:The verse begins by stating that God has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world. This speaks to the concept of divine election or predestination. Before the creation of the world, God already had a plan to save and redeem humanity through Jesus Christ. This choice is not based on anything we have done or deserved but is purely an act of God’s grace and mercy.

Purpose of God’s choice:The verse goes on to explain the purpose of God’s choice. It states that we have been chosen in Christ so that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love. God’s intention in choosing us is to sanctify us, to make us holy and blameless in His sight. This is not something we can achieve on our own, but it is a work of God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit within us.

Holiness and blamelessness:The goal of God’s choice is for believers to be holy and without blame before Him. Holiness refers to a life set apart for God, characterised by righteousness, purity, and obedience to His commands. Being without blame means being free from guilt or fault. Through our union with Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, God works in us to transform us and conform us to the image of His Son.

Love as the motivation:The verse concludes by emphasising that all of this is done in love. God’s love is the foundation and motivation behind His choice and His desire for us to be holy and blameless. It is not a cold, distant selection, but a deep, personal, and selfless love that seeks our well-being and conformity to His character.
