Ephesians 4:25

Listen to this article

“Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.”

Context:The book of Ephesians was written by the Apostle Paul to the believers in Ephesus and emphasizes the unity of believers in Christ. In Ephesians 4, Paul discusses how Christians should live out their faith and maintain unity in the body of Christ.

Putting away lying:The verse begins with the exhortation to put away lying. Lying is contrary to the nature of God, who is the embodiment of truth. It refers to intentionally deceiving others by speaking falsehoods or distorting the truth. As believers, we are called to live lives of honesty and integrity.

Speak every man truth with his neighbor:Instead of lying, Paul instructs believers to speak the truth to one another. Truthfulness is a fundamental aspect of Christian character. Our words should reflect the truth of God’s Word and be spoken in love. When we speak the truth, we build trust, foster healthy relationships, and promote unity within the body of Christ.

We are members one of another:Paul reminds us that as believers, we are part of the same body-the body of Christ. This emphasizes the interconnectedness and interdependence of all believers. Our actions and words have an impact on others within the body. When we lie or deceive, we harm the unity and trust among believers. Conversely, when we speak the truth, we contribute to the edification and well-being of the whole body.

Key lessons from Ephesians 4:25:

  • a) Reject lying and embrace truth: As followers of Christ, we are called to reject falsehood and deceit in all areas of our lives. Honesty should be a defining characteristic of our speech and conduct.
  • b) Speak truth with love: While it’s essential to speak the truth, we should do so in a loving and gracious manner. Our words should build up others, promote unity, and reflect Christ’s character.
  • c) Recognize our interconnectedness: We are not isolated individuals but members of the body of Christ. Our actions and words affect others within the Christian community. Therefore, we should strive to uphold truth and promote unity in our relationships.

In summary, Ephesians 4:25 teaches us to put away lying and instead speak truthfully to one another. It reminds us of our interconnectedness within the body of Christ and calls us to uphold truth and promote unity in our relationships.
