Listen to this article

“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”

Context:To gain a better understanding of Ephesians 5:17, we should consider its surrounding verses. In Ephesians 5:15-21, the apostle Paul is exhorting the believers in Ephesus to live wisely, making the most of their time and being filled with the Spirit. Verse 17 is part of this larger passage emphasizing the importance of understanding God’s will.

Be Not Unwise:The verse begins with the instruction, “Wherefore be ye not unwise.” Here, Paul is urging the Ephesian believers to avoid foolishness or lack of understanding. This indicates that believers are capable of choosing wisdom and understanding in their lives.

Understanding the Will of the Lord:The verse continues with the phrase, “but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” The phrase highlights the importance of discerning and comprehending God’s will. As Christians, we are called to seek and understand God’s desires and plans for our lives. This involves aligning our thoughts, decisions, and actions with His principles and teachings.

The Will of the Lord:The “will of the Lord” refers to God’s purpose, plan, and desires for His people. Throughout the Bible, we find that God’s will encompasses various aspects, including moral guidance, salvation, sanctification, and fulfilling His purposes in the world.

Seeking Understanding:Ephesians 5:17 encourages believers to actively pursue understanding and knowledge of God’s will. This implies that we should strive to know God’s Word, engage in prayer, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and be attentive to the teachings of wise and mature believers. By doing so, we can make informed decisions that align with God’s plan for our lives.

Application:To apply this verse to our lives, we should prioritize seeking a deeper understanding of God’s will. This can be accomplished through regular Bible study, prayer, and cultivating a personal relationship with God. As we grow in understanding, we can make choices that honor God, bring Him glory, and contribute to the advancement of His Kingdom.

  • In conclusion:Ephesians 5:17 urges believers not to be unwise but to seek understanding of God’s will. By actively pursuing knowledge of God’s desires and aligning our lives with His plan, we can live wisely and make choices that honor Him.
