Esther

Summery

Esther tells the story of God’s preserving care over His people during their exile in the Persian Empire. Though the name of God is not directly mentioned in the book, His providence is seen throughout its events as He raises Esther and Mordecai at the right time to protect the Jewish people from destruction.

The book opens with the removal of Queen Vashti and the search for a new queen. Esther, a young Jewish woman raised by her cousin Mordecai, is brought to the palace and finds favour with the king, eventually becoming queen. At the same time, Mordecai uncovers a plot against the king, an act that is recorded for a future moment of significance.

The crisis of the book arises when Haman, lifted up with pride and angered by Mordecai’s refusal to bow, determines not only to punish Mordecai but to destroy all the Jews in the kingdom. Mordecai urges Esther to act, reminding her that she may have come to the kingdom for such a time as this. Esther responds with courage, choosing to risk her life by entering the king’s presence uninvited.

What follows is a remarkable reversal. Through Esther’s wisdom, patience, and carefully timed appeal, Haman’s wicked scheme is exposed. The very gallows prepared for Mordecai become the instrument of Haman’s judgment, while Mordecai is honoured before the king and elevated to a place of authority.

The latter chapters describe how a royal decree enables the Jews to defend themselves, bringing deliverance, gladness, and peace throughout the empire. In response, the feast of Purim is established as a lasting memorial of the day when sorrow was turned into joy and danger into victory.

Overall, Esther is a book of hidden providence, courageous faith, and dramatic reversal. It shows that even in hostile surroundings, God is able to preserve His covenant people and work through willing servants to accomplish His purposes.
