Exodus 15:26

Listen to this article

And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt doe that which is right in his sight, and wilt giue eare to his Commandements, and keepe all his Statutes, I will put none of these diseases vpon thee, which I haue brought vpon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee. Exodus 15:26 (KJV)

This verse records a dialogue between God and the Israelites, spoken through Moses after the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea. Following the destruction of Pharaoh’s army, the people journeyed three days without water and arrived at Marah, where the water was bitter and the Israelites complained against Moses. When Moses interceded, God made the water sweet and then delivered the words recorded here.

The passage sets forth several foundational principles. First, it calls for diligent listening: “If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God.” The Israelites are urged to be attentive to God’s leading, seeking His wisdom through prayer, study of Scripture, and the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Second, it requires doing what is right in God’s sight, aligning actions with His moral standards, displaying integrity, love, justice, and compassion. Third, it stresses giving ear to God’s commandments and keeping all His statutes, presenting the Law as the guide for righteous living and the means by which God’s blessings and protection are received.

Finally, the verse concludes with the promise, “for I am the LORD that healeth thee.” In the immediate context this refers to physical health—God will withhold the diseases He sent upon the Egyptians if His people obey. The promise also points to a broader scope of healing that includes spiritual, emotional, and relational restoration. God is presented as the ultimate source of wholeness, offering comprehensive renewal to those who faithfully follow Him.
