Listen to this article

Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them. Exodus 15:12 (KJV)

Context: Exodus 15 records the song of Moses and the Israelites after their deliverance from the pursuing Egyptian army at the Red Sea. This song is often referred to as the “Song of Moses” or the “Song of Miriam.” It is a poetic expression of praise and thanksgiving to God for His mighty act of salvation.

Acknowledging God’s Power: In this verse, Moses acknowledges the power of God, who stretched out His right hand to bring about the salvation of the Israelites. The imagery of God’s right hand emphasizes His strength and authority, highlighting that it was God alone who accomplished the miraculous deliverance of His people.

Egyptian Defeat and Divine Judgment: The second part of the passage describes the fate of the Egyptians. As the Israelites crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, the waters returned and covered the Egyptian army, drowning them. The description of the earth swallowing the enemy is a poetic way of portraying their overwhelming defeat and the completeness of God’s judgment on those who opposed His people. The events reveal God’s judgment upon Pharaoh and the Egyptians for their harsh treatment of the Israelites and demonstrate God’s faithfulness in delivering His chosen people from bondage. The defeat serves as a powerful illustration of God’s sovereignty, protection, and victory over the forces of evil.

Spiritual Application: Exodus 15:12 encourages believers to trust in God’s power and deliverance. It reminds us that God has the ability to rescue us from our enemies and overcome any obstacle that stands in our way. Just as God saved the Israelites from the Egyptians, He can deliver us from the powers of sin, Satan, and the trials we face. We can find comfort and strength in knowing that God fights on our behalf.

Overall, Exodus 15 highlights the power, sovereignty, and faithfulness of God in delivering His people from their enemies. It serves as a reminder of His ability to bring about victory and salvation, and encourages us to trust in Him, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
