Exodus 16:25

And Moses saide, Eate that to day, for to day is a Sabbath vnto the Lord: to day yee shall not finde it in the field. Exodus 16:25 (KJV)

“And Moses said, Eat that today; for today is the sabbath unto the LORD: to‑morrow is a holy day; to‑day ye shall not find it in the field.”

In Exodus 16, the Israelites had recently been delivered from their bondage in Egypt and were journeying through the wilderness. They had been complaining about hunger, and in response God provided them with manna, a supernatural food that sustained them throughout their wilderness wanderings.

Now, let’s analyze Exodus 16:25 and explore its context and significance:

Sabbath Observance: In this verse Moses informs the Israelites that they were not to gather manna on the Sabbath day. The Sabbath, meaning “rest,” was a sacred day ordained by God for His people (Exodus 20:8‑11). It was set apart for worship and honoring God.

The Provision of Manna: God instructed the Israelites to gather manna each morning to meet their daily needs (Exodus 16:4‑5). On the sixth day they were to collect a double portion so that they could rest on the Sabbath, when no manna would appear.

Trusting in God’s Provision: The command not to gather manna on the Sabbath tested the Israelites’ trust in God’s faithfulness. By obeying, they relied on His word and acknowledged Him as their Provider.

A Reminder of the Exodus: The Sabbath command and the manna provision served as a continual reminder of God’s deliverance from Egyptian slavery. Observing the Sabbath helped the people remember that their security rested in God, not in their own labor.

Spiritual Significance: The manna and Sabbath point forward to Jesus Christ, the “bread of life” (John 6:35). Just as the Israelites depended on manna for physical sustenance, believers are called to depend on Christ for spiritual nourishment.

In conclusion, Exodus 16:25 underscores the importance of Sabbath observance and trusting God’s provision. It calls us to prioritize our relationship with Him, to rest from our labors, and to rely on Him for all our needs, while looking forward to the ultimate sustenance found in Christ.
