Exodus 17:14
And the Lord said vnto Moses, Write this for a memoriall in a booke, and rehearse it in the eares of Ioshua: for I will vtterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from vnder heauen. Exodus 17:14 (KJV)
In Exodus 17:14 the Lord speaks to Moses after the Israelites have crossed the Red Sea and are journeying in the wilderness. The people have been attacked at Rephidim by the Amalekites, a nomadic tribe, and Moses appoints Joshua to lead the Israelite army.
God commands Moses to write down the events of the battle as a memorial in a book and to rehearse them in the ears of Joshua. This instruction highlights the importance of preserving a historical account of God’s faithfulness and deliverance for future generations.
The purpose of the memorial is to provide a lasting testimony to the victory God gave His people, reinforcing their trust in Him during difficult times.
The Lord also declares that He will utterly put out, or blot out, the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. This statement signifies divine judgment against the Amalekites for their unprovoked aggression and assures that their name will be erased.
The verse teaches several lessons: it demonstrates the significance of recording and preserving events that testify to God’s faithfulness; it underscores the consequences of opposing God’s people and purposes; it highlights God’s desire to protect and provide for His chosen, ensuring their victory over enemies; and it calls believers to teach future generations the cost of disobedience.
Overall, Exodus 17:14 serves as a reminder to believers to document and pass down experiences of God’s intervention and guidance, keeping alive the memory of His interventions and the ultimate judgment on those who oppose Him. It encourages the church today to keep a faithful record of God’s work.
