Exodus 18:26
And they iudged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought vnto Moses, but euery small matter they iudged themselues. Exodus 18:26 (KJV)
This verse is part of the narrative in Exodus that describes the events after the Israelites had been delivered from slavery in Egypt and were journeying toward the Promised Land. In this passage Moses’ father‑in‑law, Jethro, advises him on delegating the task of judging and settling disputes among the people of Israel.
Effective delegation is emphasized. Moses was initially shouldering the responsibility of judging every matter among the people. Jethro, seeing the heavy burden this placed on Moses, suggested that he appoint capable individuals to assist him in judging the people. By delegating the smaller cases, Moses could focus on the most difficult cases, while others were empowered to handle the less serious matters. This illustrates the importance of distributing tasks and responsibilities so a community can function efficiently.
The verse also notes that the appointed judges judged the people “at all seasons.” This suggests that the judges were available and accessible whenever disputes or conflicts arose, providing a consistent and fair system of judgment. A continual, just mechanism allows people to seek resolution to their issues without delay.
Handling hard causes is another key point. The more challenging cases were brought to Moses for judgment. These “hard causes” required Moses’ wisdom, discernment, and guidance, demonstrating the value of seeking wise counsel from those with experience when facing complex or significant issues. It also underscores the need to recognize one’s limitations and to seek help when necessary.
Finally, the people judged themselves in small matters. This indicates that the Israelites were encouraged to resolve minor disputes among themselves without the need for intervention from the appointed judges. It highlights personal responsibility and the ability to settle conflicts amicably, preventing unnecessary escalation.
Overall, Exodus 18:26 teaches the significance of effective delegation, the need for an accessible and just system of judgment, the value of seeking wise counsel in challenging situations, and the importance of personal responsibility in resolving minor conflicts. The passage offers practical wisdom for managing communal affairs and promoting harmony within a community.
