Exodus 22:10

If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it:

Exodus 22:10 (KJV)

This verse appears in the Book of Exodus, which records how God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and led them toward the Promised Land. In ancient Israel, livestock such as donkeys, oxen, and sheep were valuable property, essential for farming, transport, and family income. The law here addresses a common situation: a person gives an animal to a neighbour for safekeeping, and the animal dies, is injured, or is driven away with no witness to what happened.

The verse describes three possible outcomes: the animal dies, is hurt, or is taken by force. In each case, no one saw the event. This created a legal problem because the neighbour could not prove his innocence, and the owner could not prove his loss was caused by neglect. The law therefore provided a way to settle the matter fairly, protecting both the owner and the caretaker from false accusations.

The following verses in Exodus 22 show that the neighbour was required to take an oath before the Lord to confirm he had not harmed or stolen the animal. This practice reflects a wider biblical principle: God sees what human witnesses cannot, and He cares about honesty in everyday dealings. The New Testament also calls believers to act with integrity in all things, knowing that God is the ultimate judge.

This passage teaches the importance of trust and responsibility in community life. When someone entrusts us with their property, we are to care for it faithfully, even when no one is watching. It also reminds us to handle accidents and disputes with honesty, not seeking to hide the truth or shift blame. In our work, families, and churches, we should be people of integrity, knowing that our actions are always seen by God.

Consider how you treat what has been entrusted to you, whether it is another person’s belongings, time, or reputation. Do you act with the same care when no one is watching as when others are present? This verse invites you to live with a clear conscience before God, trusting that He sees every situation and will bring justice in His time.
