Listen to this article

If thou afflict them in any wise, and they crie at all vnto mee, I will surely heare their crie. Exodus 22:23 (KJV)

Exodus 22:23 is part of a section in the Book of Exodus that outlines various laws and commandments given by God to the Israelites. This particular verse addresses the treatment of the vulnerable and oppressed within society. The verse begins by mentioning the affliction of individuals, emphasizing that if anyone causes harm or distress to others—specifically the weak or disadvantaged—God takes notice. The phrase “afflict them in any wise” suggests any form of mistreatment, oppression, or exploitation inflicted upon those who are powerless or in need.

The verse further states that if the afflicted individuals cry out to God for help, He will surely hear their cry. This emphasizes God’s compassion and concern for the downtrodden and oppressed, as well as His commitment to justice. It indicates that God is not indifferent to human suffering but actively listens to the pleas of those in distress.

From a broader biblical perspective, this verse reflects a consistent theme throughout Scripture: God’s care for the vulnerable, oppressed, and marginalized members of society. It highlights God’s expectation that His people would also extend compassion, justice, and support to those in need. The passage serves as a reminder of the importance of treating others with fairness, compassion, and dignity.

Believers are therefore encouraged to actively seek justice and provide assistance to those who are suffering. The promise that God hears the cries of the afflicted calls us to respond with empathy and action. In summary, Exodus 22:23 underscores God’s attentiveness to the cries of the oppressed and His commitment to justice, urging us to be mindful of our treatment of others, especially the vulnerable, and to extend compassion and aid to those in need.
