Exodus 25:20

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be.”

Context:The book of Exodus provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to their liberation and the establishment of their covenant with God. In Exodus 25, God instructs Moses on the construction of the tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary where God’s presence would dwell among His people.

The Mercy Seat:In this verse, God gives specific instructions regarding the mercy seat, which was a gold-covered slab on top of the Ark of the Covenant. The mercy seat served as a representation of God’s throne and His presence among the Israelites. It symbolized God’s willingness to meet with His people and extend His mercy and forgiveness.

The Cherubim:The cherubim were angelic beings with wings that were positioned on either side of the mercy seat. They were part of the intricate design of the Ark of the Covenant. The cherubim symbolized God’s holiness and His heavenly hosts.

The Wings of the Cherubim:The verse states that the cherubim were to stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings. This imagery suggests a posture of reverence, protection, and honor. The outstretched wings served as a canopy over the mercy seat, creating a sacred space where God’s presence would dwell.

The Faces of the Cherubim:The faces of the cherubim were directed towards one another, and both of them were to face the mercy seat. This positioning indicated unity and focus. The cherubim were not looking elsewhere but toward the mercy seat, emphasizing the significance of God’s presence and the importance of His mercy.

Symbolism and Meaning:The cherubim’s wings and faces reflect important spiritual truths. The covering of the wings represents God’s protection, shelter, and grace. The cherubim’s faces looking toward the mercy seat represent their constant attention and focus on God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Application:Exodus 25:20 teaches us several valuable lessons. Firstly, it highlights the significance of God’s mercy and forgiveness. The mercy seat was a reminder that God desires to show mercy to His people, extending His loving-kindness even when they fall short. Secondly, it reminds us of the reverence and honor we should show in God’s presence. Just as the cherubim covered the mercy seat with their wings and focused their gaze on it, we are called to approach God with awe, respect, and a heart turned toward Him.

In summary, Exodus 25:20 emphasizes the importance of God’s mercy and the cherubim’s role in the tabernacle. It symbolizes God’s presence among His people, His willingness to forgive, and the reverence we should have in His presence. This verse reminds us of the significance of God’s mercy in our lives and encourages us to approach Him with humility, gratitude, and an awareness of His holiness.
