Exodus 25:25

And thou shalt make vnto it a border of an hand bredth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crowne to the border thereof round about. Exodus 25:25 (KJV)

The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, God instructs Moses regarding the construction of the Table of Showbread, a sacred piece of furniture used in the Tabernacle to display the bread of the Presence.

The Table of Showbread was a significant object in the Old Testament. It was made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold, symbolizing both the provision of God and the fellowship between God and His people. The verse specifically focuses on the design of the border and the golden crown around the Table.

The border, measuring a handbreadth (approximately four inches or ten centimeters) wide, was placed around the top of the Table. It served as a decorative rim or molding. Symbolically, it represented the distinction and separation between the holiness of God and the people, emphasizing the sacredness and uniqueness of the Table.

The golden crown attached to the border encircled the Table completely. This crown signified the sovereignty and kingship of God, symbolizing His authority, majesty, and rule over His chosen people. It also indicated the honor and reverence that should be given to God’s presence and His covenant.

Application: While the Table of Showbread held great significance in the Old Testament, as Christians we can draw spiritual lessons from Exodus 25:25. The attention given to the details of the Table’s construction reminds us of the importance of honoring God in our worship and service. Just as the Table was set apart and treated with reverence, we should approach God with awe and respect, recognizing His holiness and majesty.

Honoring God’s Presence: The border and the golden crown serve as reminders to honor God’s presence in our lives. We can do this by seeking His guidance, studying His Word, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him through prayer and worship. As believers, we are called to acknowledge God’s sovereignty and allow Him to reign in our hearts.

Reverence and Respect: The Table was a visual representation of God’s presence among the Israelites. Similarly, as followers of Christ, we should treat sacred spaces, such as churches and places of worship, with reverence. We must also show respect for the spiritual symbols, rituals, and practices that help us connect with God.

Reflecting God’s Holiness: The border and the golden crown were made of precious materials, reflecting the splendor and holiness of God. As Christians, we are called to reflect God’s holiness in our lives by living according to His commandments, walking in love, and pursuing righteousness. We should strive to live in a way that honors and glorifies Him.

Remember, this Bible study provides an interpretation and application of Exodus 25:25 based on its context and symbolism. It is always beneficial to explore other resources, seek guidance from spiritual leaders, and allow the Holy Spirit to illuminate the meaning of Scripture as you study and apply it to your life.
