Exodus 26:13

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And a cubit on the one side, and a cubit on the other side of that which remaineth in the length of the curtains of the tent, it shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it.”

Context:The book of Exodus records the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, God gives detailed instructions to Moses regarding the construction of the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that would serve as a place of worship and communication between God and the Israelites during their wilderness journey.

The Tabernacle:The tabernacle consisted of several components, including the outer court, the holy place, and the most holy place (also known as the Holy of Holies). The verse in question specifically addresses the curtains of the tent, which were part of the tabernacle’s covering.

The Dimensions:In Exodus 26:13, God instructs that the curtains of the tent should be long enough to hang over the sides of the tabernacle. Each curtain was to measure one cubit on both sides, extending beyond the actual length of the tabernacle.

Symbolic Meaning:The details of the tabernacle’s construction hold symbolic significance. The tabernacle was a representation of God’s dwelling among His people, and it foreshadowed the coming of Jesus Christ. The curtains, along with the other elements, served as a visual reminder of God’s holiness and His desire to be in relationship with His people.

Protection and Covering:The curtains hanging over the sides of the tabernacle provided protection and covering for the sanctuary. This symbolized God’s provision and care for His people, shielding them from the elements and any potential harm. It also conveyed the idea that God’s presence was to be revered and kept separate from the rest of the camp.

Application:While the specific instructions regarding the tabernacle may not directly apply to us today, we can draw spiritual lessons from this passage. Just as God provided protection and covering for the tabernacle, He also watches over and cares for His people today. We can trust in His provision and seek His presence, knowing that He desires to be in relationship with us.

Reverence for God’s Presence:The tabernacle serves as a reminder to approach God with reverence and awe. Though we may not have a physical tabernacle today, we can cultivate an attitude of worship and reverence in our hearts, recognizing God’s holiness and seeking His presence in our lives.

In summary, Exodus 26:13 describes the dimensions and purpose of the curtains of the tabernacle. The verse emphasizes God’s provision, protection, and the need for reverence in approaching His presence. While the specifics of the tabernacle may not be directly applicable today, the underlying principles of God’s care and our reverence for Him still hold true.
