Exodus 28:14

And two chaines of pure gold at the ends; of wreathen worke shalt thou make them, and fasten the wreathen chaines to the ouches. Exodus 28:14 (KJV)

Exodus 28 records the precise instructions God gave to Moses for the garments of the high priest and the other priests who would serve in the tabernacle. Central to these instructions is the ephod, a sacred vestment worn exclusively by the high priest during religious ceremonies. The passage commands that two chains of pure gold be made in a twisted, “wreathen” design and fastened to the ouches—settings on the shoulder pieces of the ephod—to secure the breastplate in place.

The use of pure gold underscores the holiness of God and the need for consecration in approaching Him. The high priest’s attire, especially the gold chains, symbolized purity, dedication, and the sanctity of the priestly office. The intricate workmanship reflects the beauty and glory of God’s presence, reminding believers that worship and service should be offered with excellence and devotion, giving God the best of our abilities.

These chains also point forward to the mediatorial role of Christ. Just as the high priest, wearing the ephod and its golden chains, acted as a bridge between God and Israel, Jesus Christ fulfills the ultimate high‑priestly function, reconciling humanity to the Father through His sacrificial work on the cross.

The chains’ purpose—to hold the breastplate securely—illustrates the need for believers to remain steadfast and anchored in God’s Word and promises, even amid trials. Their attachment to the ephod’s settings highlights unity within the body of Christ; believers are called to support one another, forming a connected, cohesive family under the lordship of Christ.

In reflecting on Exodus 28:14, we are urged to pursue holiness, offer worship of the highest quality, recognize Christ as our Mediator, stay firm in faith, and nurture unity among believers. May our lives honor God through purity, excellence, and loving connection with fellow believers, drawing ever nearer to the eternal High Priest and Savior, Jesus Christ.
