Exodus 29:17

Listen to this article

And thou shalt cut the ramme in pieces, and wash the inwards of him, and his legs, and put them vnto his pieces, and vnto his head. Exodus 29:17 (KJV)

This verse is a part of the instructions given by God to Moses regarding the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. The context is the dedication ceremony for the priests who will serve in the tabernacle, and this particular verse focuses on the preparation of a ram offering.

Consecration of the Priests: Before the priests could begin their duties in the tabernacle, they had to undergo a process of consecration, or dedication, which involved several rituals and offerings. This was done to set them apart for holy service to God.

The Ram Offering: In this verse, the focus is on the offering of a ram. The ram was an important animal in sacrificial worship, often symbolising dedication and commitment to God. The use of the ram in this ceremony signifies the priests’ complete dedication to serving God and His people.

Cutting the Ram in Pieces: As a part of the offering process, the ram was cut into pieces. This practice of dividing the animal was common in many Old Testament sacrifices. It emphasised the complete surrender of the offering to God, holding nothing back.

Washing the Inwards and Legs: After cutting the ram into pieces, the inwards (or internal organs) and legs were washed. This washing was a symbol of cleansing and purification. It signified the need for purity and holiness in the service of God, as those who approached God’s presence had to be ceremonially clean.

Placing the Pieces: After washing, the various parts of the ram were placed on the altar as an offering to the LORD. This act completed the ritual, presenting the whole animal in its sanctified state.

Spiritual Significance and Application:

Total Dedication: The process of consecration of the priests reminds us of the importance of complete dedication and surrender to God in our lives. Just as the ram was cut into pieces and offered, we must be willing to offer ourselves entirely to God, holding nothing back.

Cleansing and Purity: The washing of the ram’s inwards and legs signifies the necessity of being cleansed from sin and impurity before serving God. As believers, we need to regularly come to God for cleansing and repentance, so we can serve Him with a pure heart.

The Role of Priests: In the Old Testament, the priests acted as intermediaries between God and the people. In the New Testament, believers are considered a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9), and we are called to be ambassadors of Christ, representing Him to the world.

Sacrificial Service: The ram offering and the entire consecration process also point to the concept of sacrificial service. As followers of Christ, we are called to serve others selflessly, just as Christ served us by giving His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

In conclusion, Exodus 29:17 teaches us about the consecration of the priests in the Old Testament and holds spiritual lessons for believers today. It reminds us of the need for total dedication, cleansing, and sacrificial service in our walk with God. As we seek to serve Him faithfully, let us offer ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1).
