Exodus 3:15
And God said moreouer vnto Moses, Thus shalt thou say vnto the children of Israel; The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Iacob hath sent me vnto you: this is my name for euer, and this is my memoriall vnto all generations. Exodus 3:15 (KJV)
Exodus 3:15 occurs in the narrative of the burning bush on Mount Horeb, where God appears to Moses and commissions him to deliver Israel from Egyptian bondage. In this moment God gives Moses a precise message to convey to the Israelites concerning His identity and the significance of His name.
God’s Identification: The verse opens with the declaration, “The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” By invoking the patriarchs, God affirms His covenant faithfulness and establishes His authority to act on behalf of Israel. This connection underscores that the God who spoke to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the same God who now sends Moses.
God’s Name: God adds, “this is my name forever.” In response to Moses’ earlier question, the divine name revealed in Exodus 3:14 is rendered in the KJV as “I AM THAT I AM.” The name YHWH signifies God’s self‑existence, eternality, and unchanging nature—the One who has always been and always will be.
God’s Memorial: The final clause, “this is my memorial unto all generations,” declares that the name and identity of the God of the patriarchs will serve as a perpetual reminder for every generation. It calls the people to remember, honor, and proclaim the same covenant‑keeping God throughout history.
The broader significance of Exodus 3:15 extends beyond its ancient setting. It highlights the timeless character of God, His desire for an ongoing relationship with His people, and the responsibility of believers to recognize, honor, and transmit the knowledge of His name and faithfulness to future generations. In doing so, the covenant promises are kept alive across all ages.
