Exodus 30:4

Listen to this article

“And two golden rings shalt thou make to it under the crown of it, by the two corners thereof, upon the two sides of it shalt thou make it; and they shall be for places for the staves to bear it withal.”

Context:Exodus 30 contains instructions from God to Moses regarding the construction of the altar of incense, which was an important component of the Tabernacle‑the portable dwelling place for God’s presence among the Israelites during their wilderness journey. The altar of incense was placed in the Holy Place, just in front of the curtain that separated it from the Most Holy Place (where the Ark of the Covenant was located).

Analysis and Lessons:

Materials and Design:In this verse, God provides specific instructions on how to construct the altar of incense. It was to be made of acacia wood, overlaid with gold, and adorned with two golden rings on its sides. This combination of wood and gold symbolises both the humanity and divinity of Christ. The wood represents His humanity, while the gold signifies His divine nature.

Lesson:Just as the materials of the altar were distinct yet united, Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man, united in one person. This concept is essential to the Christian faith and serves as a reminder of God’s plan for redemption.

Golden Rings and Staves:The golden rings were attached to the altar’s sides, and through these rings, two staves (long poles) were inserted. The staves were used to carry the altar when the Israelites moved the Tabernacle from one location to another during their journey in the wilderness.

Lesson:The mobility of the Tabernacle and the altar of incense illustrates the Israelites’ dependence on God’s leading and guidance. As they followed His cloud by day and pillar of fire by night, they had to be ready to move at any moment. This reminds us that as Christians, we must be open and willing to follow God’s leading and be ready to go wherever He calls us.

Intercessory Prayer:The altar of incense had a significant purpose‑it was a place of intercessory prayer. The incense burned on the altar symbolised the prayers of the people ascending to God.

Lesson:The altar of incense reminds us of the importance of prayer in our relationship with God. Prayer is a means through which we communicate with God, present our needs, seek His guidance, and intercede for others. It is a powerful and essential aspect of our Christian walk, drawing us closer to God and allowing us to participate in His plans and purposes.

A Fragrant Offering:The incense used on the altar was carefully prepared and had a pleasing aroma when burned. It represented the acceptable worship and devotion of the people to God.

Lesson:As believers, we are called to offer our lives as living sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1). Just as the incense had a pleasing fragrance, our lives should be filled with the fragrance of Christ‑displaying love, humility, and righteousness. Our worship and devotion should be sincere and pleasing to God.

Application:

Embrace Christ’s Nature:Reflect on the nature of Jesus Christ‑fully God and fully man‑and appreciate the significance of this truth in your faith journey.

Be Open to God’s Leading:Remain open and willing to follow God’s guidance, just as the Israelites were ready to move with the Tabernacle.

Prioritize Prayer:Cultivate a consistent and fervent prayer life, knowing that your prayers ascend to God like incense.

Live as a Fragrant Offering:Let your life be a testimony of Christ’s love and righteousness, offering yourself as a pleasing fragrance to God.

Remember that studying the Bible is an ongoing process of discovering God’s truths and allowing them to transform your life. May this study of Exodus 30:4 inspire you to deepen your relationship with God and walk more closely with Him.
