Exodus 31:1
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Exodus 31:1 (KJV)
Context
Exodus tells how God delivered Israel from slavery, led them through the Red Sea, and brought them to Mount Sinai. There He gave His law and made a covenant with His people. The surrounding chapters contain detailed instructions for building the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where God would dwell among Israel.
This verse opens a new divine speech. The phrase “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying” appears often in Exodus (for example, Exodus 25:1 and 30:11). It marks a direct message from God to His chosen servant. Moses was the mediator between God and the nation, receiving commands to pass on to the people.
Meaning
The divine name “LORD” (Yahweh) recalls God’s covenant faithfulness and His personal presence with His people. The verse shows that God takes the initiative in revealing His will. He does not leave Israel to guess how to worship Him; He speaks clearly and specifically.
The words “spake unto Moses” emphasize that the instructions that follow are not human inventions. They are divine blueprints. God Himself chose the design for the Tabernacle and the men who would build it. This establishes the authority and divine origin of the commands in Exodus 31:2-11.
Biblical connections
In the following verses, God appoints Bezalel and Oholiab, filling them with His Spirit, wisdom, understanding, and knowledge in all craftsmanship. This shows that God values skilled work and empowers those He calls. The same God who spoke to Moses still speaks today through His Word and ultimately through His Son, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:1-2).
Application
This passage calls believers to listen attentively to God’s voice and to obey His revealed will. Just as Moses received direct instruction, we can seek God’s guidance through prayer, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit. We should embrace the unique talents God has given us, using them for His purposes and in service to others.
We are also encouraged to pursue excellence in our work. The Tabernacle was to be built with meticulous care because it represented God’s holiness. Our work, done with skill and devotion, can glorify God. True ability comes from divine empowerment; as Bezalel and Oholiab were strengthened by the Spirit, so we should rely on God’s wisdom and strength for the tasks He sets before us.
Reflection
God still speaks to His people. He is not distant or silent, but reveals His will through His Word and His Spirit. This verse invites us to approach Him with reverence, ready to hear and obey. It also reminds us that every good gift, including skill and wisdom, comes from Him. We can trust that He who called us will also equip us for the work He gives us to do.
