And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying, Exodus 31:1 (KJV)

The opening words of Exodus 31:1 introduce a pivotal section of Scripture in which God gives Moses detailed instructions concerning the construction of the Tabernacle and the appointment of skilled artisans. The book of Exodus records the Israelites’ deliverance from Egyptian bondage, their miraculous crossing of the Red Sea, and their arrival at Mount Sinai, where God revealed Himself and gave the Ten Commandments. The chapters that follow lay out the precise design and workmanship required for the portable sanctuary that would house God’s presence among His people.

The formula “And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying” signals a direct divine message and underscores the authority of the instructions that follow. This recurring phrase throughout Exodus marks God’s communication with Moses as the chosen intermediary, conveying laws, commands, and encouragement for the nation of Israel.

In the subsequent verses (Exodus 31:2‑11), God specifically appoints Bezalel and Oholiab, filling them with His Spirit, wisdom, understanding, and knowledge in all manner of workmanship. These men are designated chief artisans responsible for constructing the Tabernacle and its furnishings, demonstrating that God values skilled craftsmanship and empowers those He calls to serve.

The emphasis on skilled labor highlights the importance of excellence in the work that represents God’s holiness. The Tabernacle was to be a place of great significance in Israel’s religious life, and God desired it to be built with meticulous care and superior artistry. This principle invites believers to pursue excellence and integrity in their own vocations, recognizing that our work can glorify God when done with skill and devotion.

Practical applications flow naturally from this passage. First, we are called to seek God’s guidance, just as Moses received direct instruction through prayer, Scripture, and the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Second, we should embrace the unique talents God has given each of us, using those gifts for His purposes and in service to others. Third, we are encouraged to strive for excellence in every endeavor, allowing our craftsmanship to reflect God’s character. Finally, we must acknowledge that true ability comes from divine empowerment; as Bezalel and Oholiab were strengthened by the Spirit, so too should we rely on God’s wisdom and strength to fulfill the tasks He sets before us.

In summary, Exodus 31:1 sets the stage for the detailed instructions on building the Tabernacle, emphasizing God’s direct communication with Moses and His deliberate selection of skilled individuals. The passage calls believers to seek divine guidance, employ their God‑given abilities for His glory, pursue excellence in all work, and depend on the Holy Spirit’s empowerment.
