And the Table, and his furniture, and the pure Candlesticke, with all his furniture, and the Altar of incense: Exodus 31:8 (KJV)

Context: Exodus is the second book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, which comprises the first five books. The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land under the leadership of Moses.

In the preceding chapters, God has called Moses to be the deliverer of His people, and He has given him detailed instructions on constructing the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where God’s presence would dwell among the Israelites during their wanderings in the wilderness.

Verse 8 is part of God’s instructions to Moses regarding the skilled craftsmen who will be involved in the construction of various elements within the tabernacle.

Key Points:

The Tabernacle and Its Furnishings: In this verse, God specifies certain elements of the tabernacle that are to be constructed by the skilled artisans. These include the table and its furniture, which refers to the table of showbread placed on the north side of the Holy Place holding twelve loaves representing the twelve tribes of Israel and symbolizing God’s provision. The pure candlestick and its furniture refers to the golden lampstand, also known as the menorah, which stood opposite the table of showbread; its seven lamps burned continuously, representing God’s light and guidance. The altar of incense was located in the Holy Place just before the veil separating it from the Most Holy Place and was used for burning incense, symbolizing the prayers of the people rising to God.

Skilled Artisans: God appointed certain individuals with specific talents and skills to craft these items. These skilled craftsmen were filled with the Spirit of God, enabling them to work with exceptional craftsmanship and excellence, highlighting the importance of using one’s God‑given talents for His purposes.

Symbolic Significance: Each of the elements mentioned had significant spiritual symbolism for the Israelites. The table of showbread reminded them of God’s sustenance, the golden lampstand represented God’s presence and guidance, and the altar of incense pointed to the importance of prayer and worship.

Lessons and Application:

God’s Attention to Detail: Through the detailed instructions for constructing the tabernacle and its furnishings, we see God’s attention to detail in His plans for worship and dwelling among His people. This shows that God cares about how we approach Him in worship and desires reverence and order.

The Importance of Spiritual Gifts: God gifted individuals with specific skills to serve in various capacities within the community of faith. Each person’s contribution is essential in fulfilling His purposes.

Symbolism in Worship: The tabernacle’s elements had symbolic meanings that pointed to spiritual truths. Today, as Christians, our worship and service should be filled with meaning and purpose, understanding that our actions and symbols can communicate profound spiritual messages.

The Holy Spirit’s Empowerment: The fact that the skilled artisans were filled with the Spirit of God emphasizes the importance of relying on the Holy Spirit’s guidance and empowerment in all aspects of our lives, including our work and service for God.

In summary, Exodus 31:8 provides insight into God’s specific instructions for constructing elements of the tabernacle and emphasizes the importance of skilled artisans working under the influence of the Holy Spirit. It also highlights the symbolism behind the tabernacle’s furnishings, teaching valuable lessons about worship, service, and the use of our spiritual gifts in God’s kingdom.
