Exodus 33:17

Listen to this article

And the Lord said vnto Moses, I will doe this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name. Exodus 33:17 (KJV)

Exodus 33 is a pivotal chapter in Scripture, revealing the deep relationship between God, Moses, and the Israelites. Prior to this verse the people had sinned by fashioning and worshipping a golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. Their rebellion provoked God’s anger, and He considered not going with them on their journey to the Promised Land.

Moses interceded on behalf of the people, pleading that God would not abandon them. In verses 12‑16 he asked God to show him His ways so that he and the nation might find favor in God’s sight, seeking assurance that God’s presence would go with them and set them apart from all other peoples.

God’s response in verse 17 affirms Moses’ request. He promises to do what Moses has asked because Moses has found grace in God’s sight. This declaration of grace underscores God’s favor and kindness toward Moses, a key reason for granting the request.

The statement “I know thee by name” signifies a personal and intimate relationship. In biblical culture, knowing a person’s name conveys deep knowledge of their character, nature, and essence. God’s personal knowledge of Moses indicates a unique, close relationship between Creator and servant.

The significance of God’s grace is highlighted throughout. Grace is God’s unmerited favor, a gift not earned but freely given. Moses, though flawed, received this grace, which secured God’s presence with the Israelites and demonstrates God’s willingness to relate to His people despite their shortcomings.

Application for believers emerges clearly. First, the passage reminds us of the power of intercession; Moses stood in the gap for his people, and we too are called to pray for others, seeking God’s mercy and grace on their behalf.

Moses’ longing for God’s presence should inspire believers to pursue an intimate relationship with the Divine. Knowing God intimately enables us to understand His ways, receive guidance, and experience His transforming power in our lives.

God’s promise to go with Moses and the Israelites reassures us of His faithfulness. Likewise, believers can trust that God will never leave nor forsake us, even in challenging circumstances, and that His abiding presence remains a source of strength.

In conclusion, Exodus 33:17 teaches the importance of God’s grace, the pursuit of His presence, and the power of intercessory prayer. It also emphasizes the personal, intimate relationship God desires with His people. May this passage encourage us to deepen our relationship with God, knowing that we, too, have found grace in His sight through Jesus Christ.
