Exodus 33:21
And the Lord said, Beholde, there is a place by mee, and thou shalt stand vpon a rocke. Exodus 33:21 (KJV)
The book of Exodus records the Israelites’ deliverance from Egyptian bondage under Moses’ leadership. After the people fell into the grave sin of worshipping the golden calf, God’s anger threatened to withdraw His presence. Moses, acting as mediator, interceded for forgiveness and continued guidance. In Exodus 33 Moses enters the tent of meeting (the tabernacle) to speak with the Lord. Verse 11 tells us that God spoke to Moses “face to face, as a man speaks to his friend,” revealing a remarkable intimacy that underscores the importance of seeking a close, personal relationship with the Almighty.
Moses’ desire to know God is evident in verse 13, where he pleads that God’s presence remain with the people so that he may know God’s ways and find grace. This longing for intimate knowledge of God is a model for believers: we are called to study Scripture, pray, and meditate so that we may grow in understanding of His character and purposes.
God’s assurance follows in verse 14: He promises that His presence will go with Moses and give him rest. This reminder of God’s faithfulness encourages us that, even in difficulty, His promises endure and He will not abandon us (cf. Deuteronomy 31:6; Hebrews 13:5).
Verse 20 warns that no one can see God’s face and live, for His glory is overwhelming. Yet verse 21 provides a gracious provision: Moses may stand upon a rock while God’s glory passes by, the rock serving as a shelter and protection. The image illustrates how God supplies a secure foundation for His people amid His awe‑inspiring presence.
In the New Testament the rock becomes a foreshadowing of Christ. Scripture describes Jesus as the “rock” upon which believers build their lives (see 1 Peter 2:6; Psalm 18:2 quoted in the NT) and as the “spiritual rock” that accompanied the Israelites in the wilderness (1 Cor 10:4). Through Christ we can approach God’s presence without fear of condemnation (Eph 2:18).

In conclusion, Exodus 33:21 teaches the importance of seeking God’s presence, yearning to know Him, trusting His promises, and finding refuge in Christ, the true rock. May these truths shape our daily walk with the Lord.
