Exodus 34:21

Listen to this article

Sixe dayes thou shalt worke, but on the seuenth day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in haruest thou shalt rest. Exodus 34:21 (KJV)

This verse is from Exodus 34:21, part of the instructions given to Moses during his encounter with God on Mount Sinai following the golden calf incident. The passage reflects God’s command regarding Sabbath observance, including specific agricultural contexts. The verse underscores the importance of resting on the seventh day, a principle established in the Fourth Commandment (Exodus 20:8‑11). Observing the Sabbath was a crucial part of Israelite religious and communal life, allowing them to honor God’s creation, remember God’s rest after creation, and prioritize worship and spiritual renewal.

God’s instructions highlight His concern for human well‑being. A six‑day work rhythm supports productivity, while the Sabbath rest prevents burnout and maintains physical and spiritual health.

The command to rest during “earing time” (plowing and planting) and “harvest” reflects the demands of agricultural life. The wording about “earring time and harvest” does not appear in the King James Version of Scripture. Later passages describe festivals that occur during agricultural cycles, reminding the people to trust God’s provision even amid demanding seasons.

Observing rest during critical farming seasons affirmed the Israelites’ reliance on God as the ultimate source of their harvest. Observing the Sabbath demonstrates trust in God’s provision and sovereignty, acknowledging that God is the ultimate provider of sustenance and that success is not solely dependent on human effort.

Though given to ancient Israelites, this command offers enduring wisdom for modern life. The Sabbath principle serves as a reminder to take time for worship, spiritual renewal, and quality moments with family and community.

Jesus invites all who are weary to find rest in Him (Matthew 11:28, KJV), extending the Sabbath concept beyond physical rest to spiritual peace through faith.

In the New Testament, Jesus invites those who are weary to find rest in Him: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28, KJV).

Exodus 34:21 ultimately reinforces the timeless value of balancing work and rest, trusting in God’s provision, and honoring Him through dedicated time of worship and reflection. In conclusion, the biblical teaching on the Sabbath underscores the importance of setting aside regular time for rest and worship, even during periods of intensive work, calling believers to trust in God’s provision and to maintain a healthy balance between labor and rest.
