Exodus 34:32

Listen to this article

And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gaue them in commandement all that the Lord had spoken with him in mount Sinai. Exodus 34:32 (KJV)

The book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible and part of the Pentateuch, narrates Israel’s journey from Egyptian slavery to the establishment of God’s covenant with His people. In chapter 34 Moses has just spent forty days and forty nights on Mount Sinai in the presence of the Lord, where God renewed the covenant and gave a new set of tablets after the first were broken because of the golden calf.

Unity of the People – The verse records that after Moses’ communion with God, all the children of Israel came near to him. Their approaching “came nigh” reflects a deep desire to be close to the leader who had spoken directly with the Almighty, demonstrating a sense of unity and reverence as they gathered to hear God’s commandments.

Moses as Mediator – Moses served as the chosen intermediary between God and Israel, delivering divine messages, laws, and instructions. This underscores the importance of godly leadership and how God can work through human vessels to communicate His will.

Receiving God’s Commandments – Moses conveyed to the people the commandments received on Mount Sinai. These form the core of the Mosaic Law, including the Ten Commandments and other statutes governing worship, social justice, and moral conduct. The commandments were intended to guide the nation in righteous living, set them apart as a holy people, and show them how to worship the Lord.

Importance of Leadership – Just as Moses was vital for Israel, godly leadership remains essential for any community. Leaders who seek God’s guidance and faithfully communicate His truths help others grow in their spiritual journey and deepen their relationship with God.

Reverence for God’s Word – The Israelites’ eager gathering to hear the law teaches believers to approach Scripture with reverence, eagerness, and a willingness to apply its principles in daily life.

The Role of Mediation in the New Testament – While Moses mediated the old covenant, the New Testament reveals Jesus as the ultimate mediator, fulfilling the Law and establishing a new covenant through His sacrifice. Through faith in Christ, believers have direct access to God’s grace without the need for human intermediaries.

Obedience to God’s Commandments – Although Christians are no longer bound by the Mosaic Law, its underlying principles of love, justice, and righteousness continue to apply. Believers are called to honor God by living obediently to His Word and walking in righteousness.

In conclusion, Exodus 34:32 reminds us of the significance of God’s commandments, the vital role of godly leadership, and the ultimate mediation of Jesus Christ. It encourages us to approach God’s Word with reverence and to pursue obedience to His will, following the example of the faithful Israelites who gathered to receive the divine instruction.
