Exodus 35:14

Listen to this article

“The candlestick also for the light, and his furniture, and his lamps, with the oil for the light.”

Context:The book of Exodus is part of the Old Testament and recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In chapter 35, the focus shifts to the construction of the Tabernacle, a portable dwelling place for God’s presence among the people of Israel during their journey through the wilderness.

The Tabernacle:The Tabernacle was a central aspect of Israelite worship. It consisted of a carefully designed tent, the Ark of the Covenant, an altar for sacrifices, and various other sacred objects. In this verse, the attention is on the “candlestick” or “lampstand,” which was one of the significant elements inside the Tabernacle.

The Candlestick:The candlestick, also known as the lampstand, was a specially crafted, golden lampstand with seven branches. It was positioned inside the Holy Place of the Tabernacle, on the south side, opposite the table of showbread. The lampstand played a crucial role in providing light within the Holy Place, as there were no windows in the Tabernacle.

Symbolism:The candlestick holds symbolic significance both in its physical form and its spiritual representation. The number seven is often associated with completion and perfection in the Bible, and the seven lamps on the candlestick represent the fullness of God’s light. It symbolizes the presence of God, the illumination of truth, and the guidance provided by His light.

Spiritual Application:

  • God’s Light:The candlestick’s function to provide light in the Tabernacle reminds us that God is the source of light and truth. In our lives, God’s light shines to guide us, dispelling darkness, ignorance, and confusion. When we walk in God’s light, we walk in His ways, and we experience His presence leading and guiding us.
  • Spiritual Illumination:The lampstand’s placement in the Holy Place signifies the importance of seeking God’s illumination and wisdom in our spiritual journey. Through prayer, reading the Scriptures, and being in God’s presence, we can receive spiritual insight and understanding of His will for our lives.
  • Community and Unity:The seven branches of the lampstand are a reminder of the unity and diversity within the body of believers. Each branch is essential and represents a unique part of the whole. As Christians, we are called to work together, using our individual gifts and talents, to shine God’s light collectively and make an impact on the world.
  • Supply of Oil:The lamps required oil to keep burning. In the same way, our relationship with God requires constant nourishment through prayer, worship, and studying His Word. The Holy Spirit, often represented by oil in the Bible, fills and empowers us to live a life that honours God.

In conclusion, Exodus 35:14 speaks of the significance of the lampstand within the Tabernacle, which serves as a symbol of God’s light, truth, guidance, and the unity of believers. It encourages us to seek God’s illumination in our lives, rely on His Spirit, and work together in unity to shine His light in a dark world.
