Exodus 4:9
And it shall come to passe, if they will not beleeue also these two signes, neither hearken vnto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the riuer, and powre it vpon the drie land: and the water which thou takest out of the riuer, shall become blood vpon the drie land. Exodus 4:9 (KJV)
Exodus 4:9 occurs within the dialogue between God and Moses at the burning bush. God had called Moses to deliver Israel from Egyptian bondage, and Moses expressed hesitation and doubt about his ability to convince both the Israelites and Pharaoh. In response, God reassured Moses by providing miraculous signs that would authenticate his divine commission.
The verse confronts the problem of doubt and unbelief. God foresaw that Moses would encounter skepticism and resistance, so He equipped him with signs to validate his authority as God’s messenger. Yet the text also acknowledges that even with these signs, some would still refuse to believe or heed God’s voice.
The transformation of river water into blood carries deep symbolic weight. While the water‑to‑blood sign is not listed among the initial signs given to Moses, it foreshadows the later plagues against Egypt (Exodus 7) and demonstrates God’s power over creation. Blood throughout Scripture represents life, redemption, and divine judgment; its appearance here signals both God’s ability to give life and to execute judgment.
Lessons for today emerge clearly from the passage. First, God’s provision: just as He equipped Moses with signs, He equips and empowers believers today to fulfill His purposes, especially when we doubt our abilities. Second, faith and unbelief: the Israelites’ mixed response reminds us that witnessing miracles does not guarantee belief; a receptive heart is essential. Third, the authority of God: the verse underscores God’s sovereignty over natural elements and His capacity to intervene in history. Fourth, God’s judgment: the reference to blood serves as a warning that rejecting God’s truth can lead to serious consequences.
In summary, Exodus 4:9 reveals God’s encouragement to Moses to rely on the signs already given, highlights the reality of doubt and unbelief, and underscores God’s supreme authority and the seriousness of judgment. Believers are invited to trust in God’s provision, maintain genuine faith amid skepticism, and heed the warning against rejecting divine truth.
