Exodus 9:23
And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the Lord sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the Lord rained hail upon the land of Egypt.
Exodus 9:23 (KJV)
Context
This verse records the climax of the seventh plague, the hail sent upon Egypt. Pharaoh had repeatedly refused to release the Israelites, so God displayed His power through a series of judgments. Before the hail, God warned the Egyptians to bring their livestock and servants indoors (Exodus 9:19). Those who feared the LORD obeyed and were spared.
Meaning
Moses stretched his rod toward heaven, and the LORD sent thunder, hail, and fire that ran along the ground. The rod was only an instrument; the power came from God. The fire is understood as lightning. This was not a random storm but a deliberate act of divine judgment. The hail struck man, beast, and crops, showing that God controls the forces of nature and uses them to accomplish His purposes.
Biblical connections
God had told Moses to stretch out his hand (Exodus 9:22), and Moses obeyed. His action shows that faithful obedience to God’s command brings about His mighty works. The plague also exposed the weakness of Egypt’s gods, who could not protect the land. In contrast, the land of Goshen, where the Israelites lived, was untouched, proving God’s care for His people.
Application
This event teaches that God is sovereign over creation and that He judges sin. It also shows His mercy: He gave warning so that people could escape harm. Those who heeded the warning were saved; those who ignored it suffered loss. Today, God still calls people to turn from stubbornness and obey His word. His warnings are given in love, and responding in faith brings safety.
Reflection
God’s power is not distant or abstract; it is real and active. He can use any circumstance to fulfill His will. The same God who sent hail to break Egypt’s pride also protects those who trust Him. This verse invites us to examine our own hearts. Do we resist God’s will, or do we humbly obey? The choice is serious, but God’s grace offers a way of escape for all who fear Him.
