Ezekiel 1:22

Listen to this article

“And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.”

This verse is part of a larger passage describing the vision of the prophet Ezekiel. In this vision, Ezekiel sees a whirlwind coming out of the north, accompanied by a great cloud, fire, and brilliant light. Within the light, he sees four living creatures with a human likeness, each having four faces and four wings.

The specific verse you mentioned, Ezekiel 1:22, focuses on the likeness of the firmament, or expanse, that is stretched out above the heads of the living creatures. Let’s break down the verse for a deeper understanding:

“And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature…” – The firmament refers to the expanse or dome-like structure that separates the heavens or sky from the earth. It can also be understood as the heavens themselves.

– Here, Ezekiel sees the likeness or appearance of the firmament, which suggests that he is witnessing a vision of the heavenly realm.

“…was as the colour of the terrible crystal…” – The color of the firmament, as Ezekiel perceives it in his vision, is described as the color of “terrible crystal.”

– The term “terrible” in the King James Version can be understood to mean “awesome” or “awe-inspiring.” It signifies the awe and reverence one would feel when encountering something extraordinary or beyond human comprehension.

– The reference to crystal highlights the clarity and purity of the firmament, possibly indicating its brilliance and transparency.

“…stretched forth over their heads above.” – The firmament is depicted as stretched out over the heads of the living creatures.

– This imagery conveys a sense of divine authority and majesty, suggesting that God’s sovereignty and dominion extend over the heavenly realm.

Overall, Ezekiel 1:22 reveals the breathtaking and awe-inspiring nature of the heavenly realm. The description of the firmament’s appearance as the color of terrible crystal emphasizes its beauty, purity, and the divine authority it represents. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the greatness of God and the transcendent nature of His kingdom.

It’s important to note that biblical symbolism can have multiple interpretations, and different scholars may have varying perspectives on the exact meaning of certain passages. Therefore, it is valuable to consult commentaries, study resources, and engage in further discussion to gain a more comprehensive understanding of Ezekiel 1:22 and its broader context within the book of Ezekiel.
