also: for the spirit of the living creature

was in them. Ezekiel 10:17 (KJV)

Context: The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament that records the visions and prophecies of the prophet Ezekiel. The passage in Ezekiel 10 describes a vision in which the prophet sees the glory of God departing from the temple in Jerusalem.

Symbolism of the Living Creatures: In this verse, the “living creatures” refer to the cherubim that Ezekiel sees in his vision. The cherubim are heavenly beings associated with the presence and glory of God. They are described as having four faces—a human, a lion, an ox, and an eagle—and multiple wings. They are often understood as guardians of God’s holiness.

Movement of the Living Creatures: The verse states that when the living creatures stood, they stood, and when they were lifted up, they lifted themselves up. This describes the synchronized movement of the cherubim, emphasizing their attentiveness and obedience to the Spirit of God. Their movements signify the presence and guidance of God’s Spirit.

The Spirit of the Living Creature: The verse states that the spirit of the living creature was in them. This is understood to refer to the spirit belonging to the cherubim themselves rather than explicitly to the Holy Spirit. The mention of a spirit highlights the divine character of the beings and suggests that they were animated and directed by God’s power.

Application: While the passage has a specific context within Ezekiel’s vision, broader applications can be drawn. It reminds believers of the importance of being attentive to the leading of the Holy Spirit in daily life. Just as the living creatures were guided by the Spirit’s movement, we should seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance and direction. We can also be encouraged that God’s Spirit empowers us to fulfill the tasks and assignments He has given, just as He did with the cherubim.

Conclusion: Ezekiel 10:17 portrays the synchronized movement of the cherubim, emphasizing their obedience to the Spirit of God. It calls us to be attentive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and to rely on His power to fulfill God’s purposes.
