Ezekiel 10:8
And there appeared in the Cherubims, the forme of a mans hand vnder their wings. Ezekiel 10:8 (KJV)
Context:
In the preceding chapters, the prophet Ezekiel receives a vision of God’s glory departing from the temple in Jerusalem because of the people’s disobedience and idolatry. In Ezekiel 10, the prophet sees a vision of the divine chariot or “theophany,” a manifestation of God’s presence.
Cherubim:
The verse mentions “cherubims,” angelic beings associated with the presence and glory of God. They are depicted as having multiple wings and are often described as guardians or attendants of God’s throne. Cherubim are mentioned throughout the Bible, such as in Genesis 3:24 (guarding the way to the Tree of Life) and in the design of the Ark of the Covenant.
The Form of a Man’s Hand:
The imagery of a man’s hand under the wings of the cherubim is also found in Ezekiel 1:10. This imagery symbolizes God’s involvement and intervention in human affairs, representing power, authority, and divine action.
Symbolism:
The form of a man’s hand can be seen as a sign of God’s providence, guidance, and control. It represents God’s ability to act in human history and accomplish His purposes. The fact that the hand appears under the wings of the cherubim further emphasizes divine authority and protection.
Application:
The passage reminds us that God is not distant or uninvolved in our lives. Instead, He is intimately aware of our circumstances and actively working in and through them. The form of the man’s hand under the wings of the cherubim serves as a reassurance that God is in control, even in times of chaos or uncertainty. It encourages us to trust in His sovereign hand and seek His guidance and direction in our lives.
