Ezekiel 11:12

Listen to this article

“And ye shall know that I am the LORD: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither executed my judgments, but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you.”

Context: To fully understand this verse, it is essential to grasp its context. The Israelites had been exiled from their land and were living among foreign nations, where they were exposed to pagan customs and practices. Many of the Israelites had adopted the ways of the surrounding nations, forsaking God’s commandments and failing to uphold His judgments.

Recognition of God: The verse begins with the statement, “And ye shall know that I am the LORD.” God wanted His people to recognize His authority and sovereignty. Despite their unfaithfulness, God intended to demonstrate His power and remind them that He alone is the true God.

Disobedience and Idolatry: The subsequent portion of the verse reveals the reason behind God’s judgment upon the Israelites. He accuses them of failing to walk in His statutes and neglecting His judgments. Instead, they had embraced the practices of the heathen nations around them. This refers to their participation in idolatry and other sinful behaviors that were prevalent among the neighboring peoples.

Consequences of Disobedience: God’s people were called to be a holy nation, set apart for Him. However, their disobedience led to severe consequences. The subsequent chapters in the book of Ezekiel describe the judgment and punishment that would befall the Israelites due to their unfaithfulness.

Overall, Ezekiel 11:12 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s commandments. The verse highlights the negative outcomes of adopting the practices of the world and neglecting God’s statutes. It emphasises the need for repentance and returning to God’s ways.
