Ezekiel 11:16

Listen to this article

“Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come.”

This verse is a part of the prophecies of Ezekiel, which were given during the Babylonian exile. The book of Ezekiel primarily focuses on the judgment of God upon Israel for their disobedience and idolatry, as well as the hope of restoration and the future blessings that God has in store for His people.

In Ezekiel 11:16, God speaks through the prophet Ezekiel to assure the exiled Israelites that even though He had scattered them among foreign nations, He would still be their sanctuary. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning.

“Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD”:This phrase indicates that the following words are the direct message from God Himself. It emphasizes the authority and reliability of the statement that follows.

“Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries”:This refers to the exile of the Israelites from their homeland due to their persistent disobedience. God allowed the Babylonians to conquer Jerusalem and take the people captive, dispersing them throughout various foreign lands.

“Yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come”:Despite the Israelites’ dispersion and living in unfamiliar territories, God promises to be their sanctuary. The term “sanctuary” signifies a place of safety, refuge, and holiness. God assures His people that even in their exile, He will provide them with His presence and protection.

This verse reveals God’s unwavering commitment to His people, even in the midst of their disobedience and exile. Though they would be far from their beloved temple in Jerusalem, God would manifest His presence as a sanctuary wherever they went. This promise would provide comfort and hope to the exiles, assuring them that God had not abandoned them completely.

As we reflect on Ezekiel 11:16, we can draw some key principles and applications for our lives today:

  • God’s faithfulness:Despite our failures and mistakes, God remains faithful to His promises. He does not abandon His people but seeks to be with them, providing refuge and protection in every circumstance.
  • God’s presence:God’s presence is not limited to a physical location or a specific building. He can manifest His sanctuary anywhere, even in the most challenging situations. We can find solace and security in knowing that God is always with us.
  • Trust and hope:This verse encourages us to place our trust and hope in God, regardless of our circumstances. Even in times of exile or trial, we can rely on God’s promise to be our sanctuary and find comfort in His presence.

In summary, Ezekiel 11:16 reminds us of God’s unwavering commitment to His people. Although the Israelites were exiled and scattered among foreign nations, God promised to be their sanctuary, providing them with His presence and protection. This verse serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness, His abiding presence, and the hope we can find in Him.
