Say, I am your signe: like as I haue done, so shall it be done vnto them: they shall remooue and goe into captiuitie. Ezekiel 12:11 (KJV)

Say, I am your sign: like as I have done, so shall it be done unto them: they shall remove and go into captivity. Ezekel 12:11 (KJV)

Historical context: The book of Ezekiel is set during the Babylonian exile when the Israelites were taken captive by King Nebuchadnezzar and carried away from their land. Ezekiel himself was among the exiles and served as a prophet to the people. This verse belongs to a larger prophecy in which God warned the nation of the impending captivity that was about to be fulfilled.

Symbolism and the role of Ezekiel: In this passage God instructs Ezekiel to become a living sign or symbol for the people. He is to act out a scene that visually represents what will happen to the Israelites. Such symbolic actions were a common prophetic device, providing a tangible illustration of God’s message and making the impending judgment unmistakable to the audience.

The meaning of the sign: Ezekiel was to perform the role of one who is removed and taken into captivity. By doing so he demonstrated to the people that they too would be uprooted from their land and carried away as a nation. The dramatization served as a vivid depiction of the judgment that would come because of their persistent disobedience and idolatry.

God’s warning and judgment: The sign conveyed a clear warning from God. The Israelites had turned away from Him, embraced idols, and neglected His commandments, living in unfaithfulness. Consequently they would experience the consequences of their actions, namely being taken captive by a foreign power. The prophetic sign thus underscored the seriousness of sin and the certainty of divine judgment when the people refuse to repent.
