Ezekiel 12:22

Listen to this article

“Son of man, what is that proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth?”

Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and the prophet Ezekiel was called by God to deliver messages of judgment and restoration to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. In this particular verse, God addresses a specific proverb or saying that was circulating among the Israelites in exile.

Proverb about Prolonged Days and Failed Visions:The Israelites had developed a sceptical attitude towards the prophetic messages they received. They believed that the days of judgment and exile were being prolonged, and they concluded that every vision or prophecy they heard had failed to come to pass.

Spiritual Condition of the Israelites:The proverb reveals the spiritual condition and mindset of the people. They had lost faith in God’s promises and were growing impatient with the fulfilment of His prophecies. This scepticism and doubt were signs of their rebellion and hard-heartedness.

God’s Response:In the following verses (Ezekiel 12:23-25), God responds to the proverb and emphasizes that the visions He had given through the prophets would indeed come to pass. He declares that the days of waiting would come to an end and that His word would be fulfilled in due time.

Lessons for Us:The proverb in this verse serves as a cautionary example for believers today. It reminds us of the danger of losing faith in God’s promises and becoming disillusioned when we don’t see immediate results. We should remember that God’s timing is not the same as ours, and His plans are often fulfilled in ways and timelines we may not fully understand.

  • Trusting in God’s Promises:Despite delays or seeming setbacks, we are called to trust in God’s promises, just as the Israelites were exhorted to do. The fulfilment of God’s word is certain, and His faithfulness endures forever. As we wait for the manifestation of His promises, we can find encouragement and strength in His character, knowing that He is faithful to His word.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 12:22 reminds us of the danger of losing faith in God’s promises and growing sceptical when we don’t see immediate fulfilment. It calls us to trust in God’s faithfulness and His perfect timing.
