Ezekiel 13:17

Listen to this article

Likewise thou sonne of man, set thy face against the daughters of thy people; which prophecie out of their owne heart, and prophecie thou against them, Ezekiel 13:17 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Ezekiel was written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile, around the 6th century BCE. The Israelites had been taken captive to Babylon, and Ezekiel prophesied to the exiled community, warning them of God’s judgment and calling them to repentance.

The Role of False Prophets: In Ezekiel 13, the Lord speaks through Ezekiel, addressing the false prophetesses among the Israelites. These women claimed to speak on behalf of God, yet their messages were not from Him. They prophesied out of their own hearts, promoting false hopes and deceptive visions.

Confronting False Prophets: The Lord instructs Ezekiel to confront these false prophetesses by setting his face against them. This means Ezekiel is to boldly oppose their false prophecies and expose their deception. As a true prophet, he is called to speak the truth of God’s Word, even when it is unpopular or confrontational.

The Danger of False Prophets: False prophets were a recurring problem throughout Israel’s history. They misled the people by offering false assurances, promising peace and security when God’s judgment was imminent. Such deceptive messages prevented the people from repenting and turning back to God.

God’s Judgment and True Prophecy: In the following verses (Ezekiel 13:18‑23), the Lord denounces the false prophetesses and reveals their punishment. Their deceptive practices and false visions will be exposed, and their influence over the people will be broken. God promises to deliver His people from the hands of these false prophets, restore them to a right relationship with Him, and bring judgment upon the false prophetesses, removing their influence and protecting His people.

Application to Our Lives: The passage reminds us of the importance of discernment in spiritual matters. We must be cautious and test the messages we hear, ensuring they align with the truth of God’s Word. False teachers and prophets can still exist today, leading people astray with distorted teachings and empty promises. As believers, we are called to study the Scriptures diligently and rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance to discern truth from falsehood.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 13:17 highlights the danger of false prophets and their deceptive messages. It encourages us to be discerning and to stand firm on the truth of God’s Word. By doing so, we can guard ourselves against deception and remain faithful to the Lord.
