Ezekiel 13:5
Yee haue not gone vp into the gaps, neither made vp the hedge for the house of Israel, to stand in the battell in the day of the Lord. Ezekiel 13:5 (KJV)
Ezekiel confronts the false prophets, accusing them of neglecting their duty to protect Israel’s spiritual defenses. He rebukes those who fail to warn the people of impending judgment, emphasizing that their silence leaves the nation vulnerable. The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic work set during the Babylonian exile, and the prophet was called by God to serve as a watchman over a people who had turned away from true worship.
In this chapter the false prophets are described as individuals who claimed to speak for God yet offered words of peace and security while judgment and destruction were imminent. Their deceptive messages weakened the nation’s spiritual defenses, leaving Israel exposed to the coming calamity. Ezekiel uses the imagery of “gaps” and a “hedge” to illustrate the responsibility of true prophets. The gaps represent breaches in the spiritual wall that protects God’s people, and the hedge symbolizes the boundary that keeps spiritual harm at bay. By failing to repair those gaps and reinforce the hedge, the false prophets left the people defenseless and unable to withstand the battle that would occur on the day of the LORD.
The “battle” refers to the divine judgment that would be poured out on Israel. Because the spiritual defenses were not fortified, the nation was ill‑prepared for the coming judgment and lacked the guidance necessary to navigate the crisis. Ezekiel’s message therefore underscores the importance of spiritual discernment: believers must test every teaching against the Word of God to avoid being led astray by false prophecy.
The passage also stresses the accountability of spiritual leaders. Those who claim authority must faithfully and truthfully communicate God’s message, vigilantly teaching the Scriptures and guiding people toward repentance and righteousness. As followers of Christ, we are called to build our own spiritual defenses through regular Bible study, prayer, fellowship, and obedience to God’s commands. By strengthening our relationship with the Lord we become better equipped to face life’s challenges and temptations.
Finally, the contrast between the empty promises of false prophets and the unchanging truth of God’s Word is clear. Our faith must be rooted in Scripture, which provides the wisdom, guidance, and strength needed to navigate life faithfully and securely.
