Ezekiel 13:8

Posted on 18 May at 13:56

Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because ye haue spoken vanity and seene lyes, therefore behold, I am against you, saith the Lord God. Ezekiel 13:8 (KJV)

Context: Ezekiel was a prophet called by God to convey His messages to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. During this time, the people faced numerous challenges, including false prophets who claimed to speak on behalf of God but delivered deceptive messages. These false prophets misled the people and caused them to put their trust in lies and falsehoods rather than in God’s truth. In Ezekiel 13, the prophet addresses false prophets and prophetesses who were leading people astray. They were spreading false visions, divinations, and lying oracles, claiming that these messages were from God when, in fact, they were mere products of their own imagination. These false messages gave the people false hope, leading them to ignore God’s warnings and indulge in their sinful ways.

God’s Opposition: In verse 8, God declares His opposition to the false prophets. He states that they have spoken “vanity” and seen “lies.” Their messages were empty, devoid of truth, and misleading. They did not align with God’s revealed Word or His character. Therefore, as a consequence of their deceptive practices, God declares that He is against them. This verse serves as a warning to those who claim to speak on behalf of God without a genuine divine calling. It emphasizes the importance of discernment and testing the spirits to ensure that the messages we receive are in line with God’s revealed truth in Scripture. God’s Word is the ultimate standard by which all teachings and prophecies should be evaluated.

As believers, we can draw several lessons from this verse. First, it reminds us to be cautious and discerning when listening to spiritual leaders and teachers. We should examine their teachings and messages against the backdrop of Scripture to avoid being misled. Second, it emphasizes the seriousness of misrepresenting God and spreading falsehoods. God is a God of truth and righteousness, and He expects His messengers to speak truthfully on His behalf. Lastly, this verse highlights the faithfulness of God in exposing and opposing deception. God is against those who lead others astray, and He will eventually bring judgment upon them.
