Ezekiel 16:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:59

“I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.”

Context:To better understand this verse, let’s first look at the context of Ezekiel 16. The entire chapter is a metaphorical depiction of Jerusalem as an unfaithful wife who was rescued and blessed by God. It describes how God found Jerusalem as an abandoned newborn baby, metaphorically depicting the lowly origins of the city. In verses 4-10, God describes how He cared for Jerusalem, providing for her and adorning her with beautiful ornaments and clothing.

God’s lavish provision:In verse 11, God continues to describe His care for Jerusalem by mentioning the various ways He adorned her. The “ornaments,” “bracelets,” and “chain” mentioned in this verse represent the lavish provision and blessings that God bestowed upon Jerusalem. These items symbolize God’s desire to bless His people and bring them honor and dignity.

Symbolic meaning:Beyond the literal sense, this verse carries symbolic meaning. The adornments mentioned can be seen as a representation of God’s grace, favor, and blessings upon His people. They signify God’s desire to elevate His people and bring them into a position of honor and distinction. Just as the physical ornaments beautify and enhance a person’s appearance, God’s blessings are meant to enhance and enrich the lives of His chosen people.

Spiritual application:While this verse specifically refers to Jerusalem in its historical context, we can draw spiritual lessons from it. As believers, we are part of the spiritual Israel, the body of Christ (Galatians 3:29). God desires to lavish His blessings upon us, adorning us with spiritual blessings and graces. These blessings can include salvation, forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). We should recognize and appreciate God’s abundant provision in our lives and allow His blessings to shape us into people who reflect His glory.

Gratitude and stewardship:Considering God’s generosity and blessings, this verse encourages us to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and stewardship. We should be grateful for the abundant blessings God has bestowed upon us and use them wisely and responsibly. Our blessings are not meant to be hoarded selfishly, but to be shared with others and used to honor God.
