Ezekiel 17:22

Listen to this article

Thus saith the Lord God, I wil also take of the highest branch of the high Cedar, and will set it, I will croppe off from the top of his yong twigges a tender one, and will plant it vpon an high mountaine and eminent. Ezekiel 17:22 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book written during the Babylonian exile, and the prophet received his visions and messages from God while the nation of Israel was in captivity. Ezekiel 17:22 belongs to a larger allegory in which God employs the image of a cedar tree to convey a spiritual message to His people.

In this allegory the “highest branch of the high cedar” symbolizes the ruling line or royal lineage of Israel, specifically referring to King Jehoiachin and his descendants. The “tender one” denotes a young shoot or sprout taken from the top of that line. God declares that He will take this tender shoot and plant it “upon a high mountain and eminent,” indicating His sovereign intervention to establish a new ruler over Israel despite the present exile and turmoil.

The act of planting the young twig on a high mountain signifies restoration and exaltation. It portrays God raising up a leader who will bring honour, prosperity, and security to the nation. The “high mountain” represents a place of strength, prominence, and divine favour, underscoring the elevated status of the coming ruler.

The passage also carries Messianic implications. Throughout the Old Testament, prophecies point to a Messiah from the line of David. This verse anticipates the future arrival of Jesus Christ, who fulfills those Messianic promises and establishes an eternal kingdom.

Overall, Ezekiel 17:22 conveys God’s decisive intervention, the promise of restoration, and the assurance that a future ruler will be raised to bring exaltation and a new kingdom for Israel. The verse therefore holds significance both in its immediate historical context and in its broader theological fulfillment.
