Listen to this article

“But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.”

Context:Ezekiel was a prophet who ministered to the exiles in Babylon during the sixth century BCE. This verse is part of a larger section where God addresses the people of Israel, emphasizing personal responsibility and accountability for their actions.

Repentance and Turning from Sin:The verse begins by emphasizing the possibility of repentance for the wicked. It highlights the importance of turning away from sinful behaviours and attitudes. This shows that God is willing to forgive those who genuinely repent and seek to change their ways.

Keeping God’s Statutes:In addition to turning from sin, the verse emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s commandments and statutes. It implies that true repentance involves not only a change of heart but also a commitment to live in accordance with God’s standards.

Doing What Is Lawful and Right:The verse goes on to highlight the significance of acting in a just and righteous manner. It means not only avoiding sin but also actively pursuing righteousness and justice. This underscores the holistic nature of repentance and the transformative power of God’s grace in a person’s life.

Assurance of Life:The latter part of the verse assures those who repent and follow God’s ways that they will experience life and not death. This does not solely refer to physical life but also encompasses spiritual life and the blessings that come from a restored relationship with God.

Overall, Ezekiel 18:21 emphasizes God’s willingness to forgive and restore those who genuinely repent and turn away from their wickedness. It underscores the importance of both inward transformation and outward obedience to God’s commands. It offers hope to individuals who recognize their sinful ways and choose to live in accordance with God’s righteous standards.
